Alloa: An emerging Artists’ Hub in Scotland

Andrew and the Kelpies
Andrew Wamae and the mighty Kelpies

Last October I spend a couple of days in the small unassuming town of Alloa, Scotland. Straddled between Stirling and Edinburgh you’d be forgiven if you didn’t notice it, in fact most people visiting the Kelpies are blissfully unaware of wee Alloa next door, home of an up-coming Artists and Writers community and a plucky football club Alloa Athletic who recently gave the Rangers a run for their money! It’s the former though  that deviated me from my travels to Edinburgh, Inverness and Skye to meet part of this collective of artists at Marcelle House.

With the likes of Karen Strang, Claire Burton, Gary McKenzie and Tamsin Haggis leading the charge, Marcelle House, and Alloa, is stealthily become a hub of artistic expression in Scotland. In the last year they have started a ‘60s style happening The Front Room with invited artists, writers, poets and musicians talking, presenting and displaying their art.

And as with any lively happening worth its salt, these sessions inevitably morph into open-mike huddles for the inspired to lay down their souls.

If you going via Clackmannanshire or live in the environs of Glasgow, Stirling or Edinburgh you ought to check out the scene in this wee town and, although we may love it, it ain’t just about plucky football!
